Maths
At Oliver Goldsmith Primary School we believe that number skills and wider mathematical understanding are key life skills that all children need to develop, in order to understand the world in which we live.
We aim to provide a mathematics education that follows the teaching for mastery principles and enables our children to investigate, communicate and manipulate information in a powerful way that will aid the development of their logical and creative thinking.
Our aims are:
- to give all children equal access to the mathematics curriculum
- to provide a stimulating and challenging mathematics environment where children enjoy lessons by developing team working as well as independent skills
- to develop children’s understanding of and confidence in using mathematical vocabulary
- to develop ‘mathematical stamina’ in children so that they can be confident problem solvers
- to develop a cross curricular approach so that mathematics is accessed through a range of subjects
- to adopt a ‘ mental maths’ attitude so that children’s first line of thinking is: ’Can I do this in my head? Do I need to make a few jottings?’
- to develop a range of calculation methods and be able to select the most appropriate method for the calculation
- to develop reasoning skills so that children can discuss their mathematical thinking and support their point of view with evidence
- to support children’s understanding of mathematical concepts using a range of practical resources
We firmly believe that making mistakes is part of children’s learning and we celebrate these in class as ways of discovering and correcting misconceptions. Our goal is to develop an environment which supports questioning and investigation across a range of mathematical experiences in order that Oliver Goldsmith primary school children develop a positive and confident attitude towards their mathematics.
